Fort Collins, Colorado

April 20 - 23, 2009

Since the first meeting, held at Penn State University in 1969, plant scientists with interest in air pollution effects to all forms of vegetation and natural ecosystems have met each year at various locations around the USA, Canada, and Mexico for the Air Pollution Workshop. Participants are from research programs within universities, Agricultural Experiment Stations, federal agencies such as the US EPA, USDA, and the National Park Service. In addition, many state and local officials have attended meetings when held nearby to their offices. A strong contingent of European and Asian colleagues with interests in air pollution and vegetation effects have attended the most recently held Workshops.

The 41st Air Pollution Workshop and Symposium will be held in Fort Collins, Colorado, April 20-23, 2009. The pre-workshop symposium will be held on Monday, April 20, 2009. The topic of the Symposium will be air pollution in remote and high-elevation regions. The 41st Air Pollution Workshop will be from Tuesday through Thursday, April 21-23, 2009. The Air Pollution Workshop provides an informal setting for presentations and discussions of current research topics and issues on various aspects of air pollution effects on agricultural crops, forests, and natural ecosystems. In recent years, issues related to climate change effects have also become part of the scope of the Workshop. The regional effects of pollutants, especially ozone and nitrogen deposition, are topics of particular interest. In addition, issues related to evaluation of risks associated with air pollution in natural systems have become part of the most recent Workshop discussions, and sessions dealing with education and public outreach have also been well attended. Each year the Workshop consists of a few general sessions with topics of broad interest along with several smaller sessions on specific topics. The topics selected for the final program are based upon input from Workshop participants planning to attend. The 41st Air Pollution Workshop Program will be chaired by Vicki Sandiford, Nancy Grulke, and Thorsten Grams. Please contact them with your suggestions regarding the Workshop program. To obtain additional information regarding the local arrangements for the 2009 workshop and for information on the Monday symposium please contact Robert Musselman, 41st Air Pollution Workshop and Symposium host.

Each year the Workshop consists of a few general sessions with topics of broad interest along with several smaller sessions on specific topics. The topics selected for the final program are based upon input from Workshop participants planning to attend. A 9-member committee is responsible for directing the workshop's activities.
